Visitting the Bijagos archipelago (also called Bissagos) was important to me, if even not the most important stop of my entire journey. When arriving at Bissau I had a look for the ferries, erm express boats, erm… Finally I ended up on board of a wooden, but just sea-fit piroge en-route to Bubaque
In the past years all other transport vehicles became a victim of corrosion and waiting for the quite irregularly operating boat of the French fishing club might not turn out to be a vacation pleasure. Trusting my luck I headed to Bissau as I didn’t know the piroges’ exact departure date and time. When arriving Bissau I caught that transportation by chance, just 2 hours before departure. Depending on sea state transit lasts 4 to 6 hours; costs are fix at about 2500 CFA. It’s recommended to take water and a hat with you as the boats don’t offer much shade. The boat ride passes some ship wrecks; old trawler whose capitalistic bastards owners poached in African and EU waters while also violating catch quota.

It’s amazing to see the captain precisely steering the vessel from A to B without any map or compass, only by observising the position of the sun. They might all be navigation wizards, though loading the boat isn’t their strong point. Specially on the last piroge everything gets a place that couldn’t be stored on the first few boats. Finally you’re travelling the Atlantic ocean sitting between boxes of palm wine, petrol cans and pigs, cows, poultry and lots of people.
Halfway you’ll see a razor-sharp line in the water, separating turquoise Atlantic waters from the sediment-rich Rio Geba river. Once that line is passed, soon palm tree overgrown Bubaque island will appear on the horizon.

Searching accommodation in Bubaque quickly led me to Lorent, an about 50-years old French, who settled down to build his own bungalow camp: Cadjoco.
